Sunday, Glacier Bay.

A very good night's sleep had. Breakfast in the cabin as we approach Glacier Bay. Amazing scenery which we are very badly to view from our balcony. Lots are up on deck but we can see that they are rugged up for Arctic conditions. We have the same view as them due to the ship coming into the bay and then slowly doing a full circle which takes over an hour to complete. We even saw a bear. Binoculars helped but you should be able to work out the black splotch and accept that it is a bear!
Jo has been to the cafe and brought back hot coffees for us. This is the life as we watch the world go slowly by.
Many people are up the now watching as we enter Glacier Bay but we have a perfect spot on our balcony and that's where we are happy to stay.
We saw the water spout from a whale but never saw the whale breech. Eagle eyes of mine saw what I believed were seals on an ice flow and the binoculars finally confirmed my suspicions. You will need to zoom in considerably.
Time for another mocha coffee and more glacier watching. There is one other ship doing the circuit with us. Only 2 ships are now permitted into the bay each day.
Time for lunch and we have a leisurely luncheon with some of our fellow travellers. Photos taken through the dining room window are splotchy due to marks on the windows but it is amazing scenery.
Leaving the bay we are on calm waters still and surrounded by treescapes.
Sandiago Bay is just beautiful. Alaska is really turning it on for us.
Time for more watching the world go by and then some shopping in the onboard shops. We didn't venture anywhere near the jewellery ones. I remain amazed that they do any business at all. So expensive and clearly part of a chain as Effy is in each port we stop at. Quite pushy with marketing. Thankfully there are no art auctions like they have on the Princess ships. However re clothing, I find a light puffer jacket that I like plus a long sleeve t shirt. Jo likes the puffer jacket too so gets one in a different colour, plus a light zip up jacket that she wears now. We are contented shoppers so head back to the cabin.
We have had park rangers onboard providing a commentary of the bay. It's time for them to depart so their little boathad come to collect them. They get off our ship and board theirs. Lots of waving as they head back to goodness knows where. Our last look at Glacier Bay. The other ship in the bay passes us and we both head off towards Ketchikan. We go for drinks with the rest of our travel group. Jeffrey has organised an early dinner for our group. 5.30 is nursing home dinner time in my book, but we all trudge after him and have dinner. It is orange night, in honour of the shipping line's Dutch heritage. Some other passengers have gone all out in orange but none of our group are that into it. My Bam Goreng is supposedly Dutch but I think they just changed the name from Nasi Goreng to make it sound Dutch! Whatever, it was really good.
After dinner we head up to the Crows Nest for the trivia game. We didn't fare too well but again had plenty of laughs. Sunset was spectacular.
Then they started the orange dance party! OMG. Jeffrey had already been wearing a pale orange shirt and bow tie at dinner, but he then reappeared in his entire orange ensemble. I did not know where to look!
Eventually it was time for bed. We know we are coming towards the end of our trip but we are currently in denial...

  1. I thought Jeffery was Guru Nanak there until I zoomed in on his pants!
Lovely photos. The colour of glacial water is stunning. Nice perch to view with your binoculars.
