Saturday 17 May, Juneau

We are docked in Juneau by the time we wake up. Breakfast in our cabin again and making sure we are ready for our 7.30 departure for the White horse pass rail and Yukon tour.
All aboard, as we set off through Skagway into the Yukon. We need our passports with us as we will be leaving the States, back into Canada and then back into Alaska again.
The commentary onboard is great. We are given lots of notice of special sights well before we pass them. I spent a lot of time out of the carriage on the viewing platform. Heaps of photos taken. The First Nation peoples traditionally cremated their dead but were forbidden from doing so once the settlers arrived. Instead they had to bury their deceased, so a special cemetery was provided for them.
As we travel along, there are many small waterfalls coming down the mountains. The ever changing landscape is amazing.
We are now back in Canada but it is another 12 miles before we are stopped at a checkpoint. It is now a very much changed landscape with ice and snow in every direction.
And then just as quickly, the landscape changes again.
Going into and through two tunnels was a highlight as I stood out on the viewing platform.
And just like that, we are back into snow when you often can't see where the mountains end and the sky begins.
And now we are back into sunshine yet again.

We have lunch at the Wild Adventure park in the Yukon, just past Carcross. It is ideally set up for tourists and had an amazing museum. I'm hoping that all the animals died natural deaths! Before we head back into Carcross, our driver takes us to look at Emerald lake, it isn't on the itinerary but he thinks it is a must see and I agree with him.
Carcross, previously called Caribou Crossing but as there was already one of these in BC, this Caribou Crossing had to change its name, is a quaint little place but had become a bit commercialised with its new shops all clustered together. Thankfully some of the original buildings remain along with the blue church, which was moved from another settlement.
There a nice little property for rent if any one is interested. It even has a bath right out the front by the front door! Back on the coach and it's time to head back to Skagway. It's been a great daybut a long one, 8 hours. Loved every minute of it though. Back on the ship and time to head for team trivia (where we did badly again, but still lots of laughs) then drinks with some of our group and then dinner. I went to the evening show which was meant to be country music. Their idea of country and mine do not gel. Back to the room and fall into bed. I'm pooped...

  1. Incredible. One day, I'd love to go to the Yukon. Those stunning white mountain goats are what we see here on the surrounding mountains. Emerald lake is my favourite of them all. Great photos.
