Rotorua here we come, Wednesday
Leaving Auckland this morning we are on the main highway, and see that there has been a major truck fire on the opposite side of the highway. We then see what was about 4 or 5 kilometres of 2 lanes of traffic held up behind it. Thank goodness we were going the other way. There was no opportunity to turn off for vehicles snd I reckon if any one eas on the way to the airport they would have missed their flight. Mind you we were held up for short periods of time throughout the day due to road works.
Travelling south we arrived at Waitomo where we went through the famous glow worm limestone caves which were formed more than 30 million years ago. we went on the boat ride to see those amazing little glowing creatures. Did you know that they are actually maggots, not worms, but who wants to say they've seen glow maggots? Unfortunately no opportunity to take photos in the caves, but it was pretty amazing.
Lunch at a pretty little spot and then on to Rotorua where a group of us have booked the 'Duck tour'. Off we head in a WWII amphibious vehicle. Our driver Marcus, was hilarious as he regaled us with silliness and jokes about every aspect of the vehicle, Rotorua's volcanoes and the rotten egg sulphur smell! We drove to the top of volcano domes and then splashed into 2 lakes firmed within the craters - Lakes Okareka and Tikitapu.
It was a fun and fact filled 2 hours. Then dropped back to our hotel, checked in and then wandered up into the centre of the city to Eats Street where is was buzzing! Found a spare table in a Thai restaurant and had dinner, which was really good. Wandered back to the hotel, and time to hit the hay. Another big day tomorrow.
